The New Intentions of Starting a New Business

Did I ever tell you about the first business I opened? I think it was 2010 or 2011.

I was employed at the time; Facebook was just introducing business features and I was obsessed. I was really pressing the company I was working for at the time that this was the NEXT BIG THING and we needed to set up and invest time on Facebook. They were not convinced, so instead I started talking to some friends that owned businesses themselves, or their parents did.

In a few short weeks, I launched with 3 businesses, a short monthly fee to update their Facebook pages (profiles then) and connect to some cool widget and Twitter for shared posts. Then, I’d run their weekly Facebook highlights, events, and business messaging live on the platform.

At the time, I was a runner – not a very fast one, but a consistent one nonetheless so rightfully so, I launched RUNNING SOCIAL – a social media management company for business owners that were just too busy or not quite savvy enough to care. I think in the 6 months that I was moonlighting, I generated an extra $4000.

Honestly though, I hated it! I had no systems, people would not get back to me, they would not offer any insights or ideas to what their business was doing and I felt very limited, at best. I wrapped that up quickly.

Since then, you know I have been an active owner or partner in 8 businesses. I’ve now narrowed it down to one and am opening another. Needless to say, there have been a slew of lessons, teams, structures, intentions and operational systems that I have experienced.

I was not going to let myself be led by these experiences though. Instead, I am going full throttle forward as I prepare to build, open, and launch WORK Lakes Region. And, today, I’m here to share with you what and how I am choosing to lead myself through the work.

I have set up the following framework:

  • Determine my true intentions _ and not for the business (although I am doing that) but more importantly for who I need to be and how I need to be, in order to be successful. A guideline for BEING is my first priority and I trust it will lead me in my work with a solid foundation to succeed.

My intention is to work from a place of confidence, assume ease is available, be     organized, properly delegate with clarity, ask for help and have fun.  (TBH: this has paved the pathway to making solid and timely decisions without fear).

  •  Build out the launch plan in our ASANA program with core deadlines, details and with connected resources.

There is a lot to do, and I need a schedule and accountability to where I should be placing focus on key tasks without distraction. Ultimately, a guide to use my TIME with purpose and value for the best outcome.

  • Rest. I have scheduled rest and open space periods to rejuvenate my mind, body, and soul for elevated energy.

And, lastly..

  • A loose grip on what the outcome will be. Sure, I am guiding the vision, but what I am not doing is pigeonholing myself and my team into a direct line of expectation. I want openness, possibility, new ideas and fresh perspectives other than my own. I am not willing to miss a single new opportunity because I am too stuck in detailed expectations.

I am recently in awe that the ROI on my effort to give myself more time, money and freedom by rebuilding JMG and doing the honest work of fixing up my leadership and system, has brought me to a new place and for that matter, a new level of business ownership and possibility for greater impact. Opening another business or a brand new one was never the goal, but it has become the conduit for my biggest desire to help business owners and leaders like you to also elevate yourselves for a greater life experience.
