How Do You Define Success?

Can you look at yourself in the mirror and say honestly, “I AM SUCCESSFUL?” What does it feel like to add on the words, “...Just as I am today!”?

For some of you, you won’t be able to do that. But do you know why not?

Many of us haven’t taken the time to sit down and define what success means to US. Maybe you’re reading this thinking, “Jodie, what success is is obvious! It’s reaching six figures… having 10,000 followers… being a CEO… working just four hours a week and delegating the rest to a team….”

The reality is that while there’s tons of marketing around what success “should” look like, it’s actually a very different picture for each and every one of us.

You might be pushing for that six-figure mark as your determination of success, but just because you hit it doesn’t mean you’re happy. So, let me ask you… how are you defining success and how are you measuring up?

7 Areas to Look At in Determining Your Own Success

In my experience, working with online businesses, brick-and-mortar, as well as coaching CEO’s and high-performing professional leaders, there are seven areas in which most people can rate themselves to determine what success looks like to them, and measure how they’re doing in those areas.

You can even take time right now to rate each of these on a scale of 1-10, 10 being you’re rocking it, and 1 meaning it’s not going the way you want it to.

  1. Mind: Are you learning and growing in the way you want to be? Are you reading things that spark new ideas, increase your learning, and enrich your knowledge base?

  2. Health and Fitness: Are you moving your body? Getting enough sleep? Eating foods that feel right to you and give you energy? Do you feel good in your skin?

  3. Career/Business: How’s your business going? Is it work you love to do? Are you able to step away and take time off for yourself when you desire to do so?

  4. Spiritual: Spirituality means something different to everyone, so take a look at what it means to you to feel connected and in alignment with your higher power, inner self, or the divine.

  5. Relationships: Do you have relationships that build you up? That give as much as they take? That are mutually supportive and contributing to your overall well-being and happiness?

  6. Finances: Are you making the money you want and need to be? To feed your family, to reach and surpass revenue goals, to make the impact you want, and to secure yourself for the future?

  7. Family: What does success look like for you when it comes to your family? Is it more time with your kids? More family dinners or outings? Rekindling the connection with your siblings or parents?

Spend a few minutes and write down your definition of success -what it looks like for you in all of these areas, and evaluate where you are currently. As you know, you are the leader and author of your life, and defining success needs to take into account the holistic picture of what you want that life to look like.

Ready to Go One Step Further?

Now, I challenge you to list out the top 8-10 unique areas that YOU judge yourself to be successful or not. We’re going to create a success meter individual for you where you can get clear on where you rank.

When we get clear on where we feel successful, and where we don’t, it helps us tune into the fact that we are all successful on some level. It also gives us areas to focus on and helps us, over time, measure improvement in each area.

And remember, do not allow yourself or anyone else to judge you because there is no comparison to others. Their definition of success is exactly that. Theirs.

Your goal is to focus on what changes YOU want to make in your own life to realign with what matters most to you.
